Sunrise Partners with The Franklin Institute and GSK for “Science in the Summer”

“Science in the Summer” curriculum comes to Sunrise’s summer camp sites this year!

“Science In the Summer,” an initiative led by Glaxaco Smith Kline (GSK) and the Franklin Institute, is bringing hands-on STEM activities to Sunrise summer camps!

Science in the Summer is an inquiry-based science education curriculum designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and help elementary school children grow to love science.

This year's GSK Science in the Summer theme is Be a Biologist! with all-new activities that invite children to play the role of biological scientists and tackle challenges in fisheries, plant biology, paleobiology and wildlife biology through hands-on activities and experiments.

As part of the program, Sunrise will receive a special collection of STEM materials and lesson plans in addition to in-person staff training hosted by the Franklin Institute. Sunrise staff will be trained to lead hands-on activity sessions with summer camp students focused on generating fun and engaging experiences through science!

Students will explore the world of living things as they tackle real-world problems—such as solving a mystery at a troubled fishery, uncovering ancient fossils, planning the perfect plant habitats and lending a hand to threatened hummingbirds.

The program will be offered in-person at all 3 of Sunrise summer camp locations. and is aimed at children entering 2nd through 6th grade.

GSK’s Science in the Summer is now in its 36th summer! This year there will be more than 40 participating host organizations in 27 states across the USA, and more than 30,000 children will experience what it’s like to Be a Biologist!
