To our Sunrise Family,
The events of the past few weeks have been tragic to say the very least. Ahmaud Arbey who was killed by a former police officer and his son while jogging; Breonna Taylor who was killed by police in her own bed while the true suspect was already under arrest; and most recently George Floyd who was killed by a police officer by means of kneeling on his neck for eight minutes. These examples serve as only the latest disregard for life, particularly for African American men and women.
The founders of Sunrise created an afterschool program with the vision that we would give children the resources they need to be the best they can be. When we look at the faces of the children we are honored to serve, we see all their hopes and dreams and we dedicate each day to working with them so they can achieve those dreams. We come alongside our parents and communities to ensure that they have everything they need to support these young lives. We never imagine as adults that one day their lives will be cut short for any reason, but especially at the hands of racism and injustice. Therefore, as people serving in the realm of education, this senseless loss of life is especially painful.
The Board and Staff of Sunrise believes it is important to emphatically stand against these injustices and to denounce racism and prejudice. More specifically, we stand with our African American brothers and sisters and will continue to work for the future our children deserve. The memories of Ahmaud, Breonna and George will be honored by our resolve and commitment to serve our communities. We ask that you stand with our African American brothers and sisters at this time!
